Mid 2020. It was becoming apparent that Covid was airborne in transmission, that survivors were showing a multitude of issues, and that governmental and medical agencies were struggling to be open about both. In our family, we have both engineering and medical backgrounds, and putting our heads together, we learnt about air purifiers, CO2 levels and air quality. The ability to monitor CO2 is empowering in our lives. It would be great to use an Airspot to help us protect the next generation of students.
I realized the importance of air quality around March of 2020 when we were being told we only had to wash our hands. I went to a busy Walmart while wearing gloves and no mask, and some huge sick guy could be heard coughing throughout the storeā¦getting closer to me. He ended up coughing a horrible sounding cough right as I made eye contact with him and walked by me. (I tried to hold my breath as we walked by each other.) As soon as I got home it was on the news that we now had to mask and that it was airborn, when they spent weeks saying it was not airborn + that we did not need to mask. I realized in that Walmart that there is no air quality control in the US, that any sick person can just walk in wherever and get anyone and everyone sick, that 90% population has no idea, and that we are on our own here. Whereas in China at the same time they would have people at the door checking apps preventing sick people from entering public places, as well as of course mandatory masking. Itās pretty much the 1800s when it comes to air quality control in much of the west, so anything that helps with air quality control is a step in the right direction, especially until governments start making common sense air quality implementations.
First time encountering indoor air quality measurement:
In 2020 wāre developping outdoor dust sensor stations. Reason: measure ment how far wāre off or above during a year from normalized levels. We discovered that mostly one is indoor and indoor your are exposed to woodburning for pleasure, cooking for pleasure and other people producing CO2. A major environment to be aware off the level emissions and simpel actions to avoid it.
Decades ago, before the indoor smoking ban, I used to consider IAQ as a working musician in pubs and clubs. It was a such a relief when the ban came in. Then, in the early days of Covid, it was clear that it was airborne, and that IAQ was going to be critical in reducing risk.
Started focusing on it 2-3 years ago. Outdoor air standards exist but I believe indoor air quality will be a focus in the next 5-10 years or so.
I only really started learning about indoor air quality via clean air advocates after the start of the pandemic.
I was very concerned about indoor air quality when the forest fires across western Canada were particularly bad in 2015 or so. Indoor air quality was terrible and it was clear that industrial hvac systems were just moving the smoke around inside. Inside houses was slightly better. I had a lot of trouble breathing that summer as ash rained down from the skies,
After getting long covid, my awareness of indoor air quality has remained high. I have an air quality meter sitting in my house, alerting me to problematic conditions.
I would love to win a portable monitor for the rare occasions I head out to other places!
That was in 2021, when we realized that CO2 measurement and indoor air quality (<800ppm CO2) could be part of a prevention strategy for fighting dangerous infectious diseases. This has been explained excellently in research by AlHaddrell, for example.
I started to become interested in indoor air quality when I came across a Tiktok in which a young woman was stating how she likes to crack her windows to improve indoor air quality. It led me down the rabbit hole of air purifier research.
I currently work in a building where we canāt open the windows and Iām often wondering what the CO2 readings would be.
I first realized how important indoor air quality is back in 2021, when it became clear that COVID-19 was airborne. Once I understood how much the air around us shapes our health, I never looked at indoor spaces the same way again.
I was first introduced to the topic of air quality when I lived through two wildfires. People kept saying that there was nothing we could do to protect ourselves from the smoke. That sparked an obsession that became even more important as the pandemic kicked off and then continued
